I think it is a WOW moment when you have a physician take time out of their day to call the manager/ANM and compliment a nurse for her care of a patient.

We admitted a high acuity trauma patient of Dr. M. This patient had been involved in a MVA. He was admitted from the ED to the floor when Chris Spangler was here. Dr. M. wanted to compliment the care and time that Chris took in caring for this patient. He realized that she had other patients to care for, but he felt that the care she gave this patient went above and beyond what was expected out of her on a med-surgical unit. In fact, he said that she gave exceptional care to this patient. Dr. M. said that Chris knew how to manage this patient and that she had excellent decision making capabilities and when to collaborate with him about issues/concerns. He went on to say that he felt what she did for this patient saved his life. The patient was having some kidney issues and Chris knew when to call Dr. M. and did receive orders for strict I & O every one hour along with numerous other orders. The patient needed to be watched closely. Chris was there to assess the patient's wounds and when Dr. M. came in, Chris and Dr. M. had to re-dress them, which took 1.5 hours, she did so and didn't complain. Dr. M. realized that this patient could have been an ICU patient, but Chris said she could handle the situation.

What struck me the most was when Dr. M. said, "I am proud to have her in our family. She is a rock star!"

He wanted to make sure that we recognize Chris. I believe that Chris meets the high standards we hold our employees to. I nominate her for the DAISY Award for her outstanding and compassionate care.
