An oncology patient who had been battling cancer for years had become very close to the staff on the Medical Unit. The patient considered our staff to be part of her family. She had been in and out of Medical City Denton for years. She knew she was nearing the end of her fight, but she told some of our staff she really wanted to hold on until Christmas. She wanted one more Christmas. Unfortunately, she passed away in September but staff from the Medical Unit gave her one more Christmas. The patient was in the ICU intubated. The Medical Floor nurses decorated her room with a Christmas tree and lights. They played Christmas carols and had a snow globe. They even got a Christmas card for her that the Medical Floor signed. They truly cared about this patient and wanted to make her wish come true. Years ago, I took care of this patient and I believe if she were here to recognize the Medical Floor for giving her and her family Christmas she would. Our staff truly had heartfelt compassion for this patient and her family.
