Corey is an invaluable member of the Acute Inpatient Behavioral Health team. He is committed to providing excellent nursing care and a safe environment for our veterans. Corey's compassion, skill, and dedication were especially apparent while caring for an acutely psychotic, court-committed patient, who had no insight into her illness. With the veteran becoming increasingly agitated, this situation could easily have escalated. Corey first ensured the safety of other patients by politely requesting that they clear the immediate area. He then sat with the Veteran, calmly listened to and addressed her concerns, and provided education about medications and court-commitment; in short, he deescalated the situation and showed the patient the respect she deserved. Corey's actions decreased the patient's agitation and assisted her healing process, while preserving the safety of all on the unit. Corey's mental health nursing skills nurtured a safe and therapeutic environment and reflect his commitment to the VA's ICARE values: integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence.
