Courtenay Michmerhuizen was nominated by a patient’s husband. A family member recognizes the bond between their loved one, who is a patient, and the nurse who provides outstanding care. But this nomination was different. It was submitted to the President of the University of Michigan and began with, “This is a letter of praise and one to thank you for having an RN who does her job way beyond the call of duty.” The nomination stated that “Courtenay is a special RN who really does her work with a special ease and attention. We love her like our own daughter. She never veered from her detailed job. She monitored us like we were family.” The President of the University proudly acknowledged the quality of care described and forwarded the nomination to the Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs and CEO of the Health System. The high praise comes from the husband of a patient who was diagnosed with cancer six years ago. A part of their journey has been made more comfortable by the kind and expert care provided by Courtenay. This is a well-deserved honor.
