I was hospitalized at CHI Memorial in Hixson for an illness that evolved into several diagnoses. This rapidly produced an illness in which I felt miserable and was placed on Universal Precautions. Overall, I would like to commend the staff for not making me feel isolated or infectious. All who entered my hospital room those 4 days, treated me with respect and tended well to my needs.
The nurses were outstanding, and all exemplified the expectations of the nursing profession:
"Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations".
Nurses and nursing staff treat everyone in their care with dignity and humanity - they understand their individual needs, show compassion and sensitivity, and provide care in a way that respects all people equally.
My nursing angel was Courtney Seay. She cared for me for 2 days of the 4, during my time in the hospital. They were the 2 days that I felt the worst and the most isolated from the outside world especially my husband, children, and grandchildren. Courtney's compassion and kindness embodied God's gift of caring. Her nursing skills and critical thinking were precise and very appropriate for the situation. She truly showed me compassion, kindness, and empathy that allowed me to peer into her heart.

I am a Registered Nurse and have worked in several hospitals in the US in various roles. For 43 years I have had the privileged to provide nursing care to many patients. My specialty has been primarily focused on the Operating Room within the Cardio-Thoracic / Vascular Service Line. I have been on the staff and in leadership roles for many of those years. I have given of myself to patients in the same way that Courtney gave herself to me. Courtney, her daughter, the hospital leadership, and the management of Unit 3 at CHI Memorial should be proud to employ her as a nurse. She shows respect and pride in the Nursing Profession.
I want to say, "Thank You, Courtney". It was an honor and privilege to have you care for my needs during my hospital stay. Courtney truly deserves to be honored with the DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses.
