My mother was airlifted in critical condition to your facility in Greenville, NC. As the evening progressed, my mother deteriorated, and unfortunately, she passed away the following morning. During this ordeal, I cannot say enough nice things about the care and compassion displayed by your staff. They were as kind as could be, and I know Mom received the best care and treatment possible.
One nurse, however, went far beyond the call of duty that night. My daughter lives in NJ, some 500 miles from you. She dearly loves her grandmother and was basically a wreck throughout this ordeal. At approximately 11:10 pm she called the MICU and asked if someone could deliver a message to her gram. She reached the charge nurse, Dalton Scantlin, who informed her he could do better than that. He promptly had the call forwarded to his cell phone and took it to my mother's ear so that my daughter was able to tell her how much she was loved. Dalton allowed my daughter to speak to her gram for several minutes, then was able to inform her that my mother responded to her voice with eye and mouth movements. He asked: "Is there anything else you'd like to say to your grandmother?" My daughter was then able to tell my mother that "it is okay, Gram, if it is time, don't be scared, just reach out and take C and S's hands" (my previously deceased siblings), "and be free to go with them. We love you and understand."
I can only say that Dalton is a special angel, and we are blessed that he was there, understood, and made the effort to provide some peace to my mother and daughter when it was beyond necessary. God bless you, Dalton. I never met you, but know that we will never forget your kindness in our time of dismay and grief. I hope you will understand just a little of how much your selflessness meant to us at this time.
