Dan upholds Core Values of Patient-Centered Care, Respect, Ownership, and Innovation every single day, but also specifically for our resident patient, KT.
R4 has had a complex patient for over a year, and it is not unusual for KT to feel a bit down and discouraged with his discharge potential. His hospital course has been quite challenging, at times, with many clinicians and services involved. To cheer KT up, Dan regularly engages KT with conversations - anything from gaming and sports to dogs and family life. Although KT's parents are involved, they do live fairly far away, which contributes to feelings of depression and loneliness. KT very much enjoys when his family and pup "Duke" do make the trip to visit.
Recently, Dan solicited some financial support from the R4 team to purchase some items for KT. With over $100, Dan picked out a Kirby hat, some games, and an HDMI adapter to help KT enjoy his long hospital days. Fabric items were also purchased and one of KT's CNAs created a colorful and personalized quilt for KT. After she made this lovely dog-themed quilt, it was kept on R4 for two days while the entire R4 team signed it with encouraging and supportive messages. Some messages were long, some were short; all were meaningful and showed the true caring nature of R4, this time led by Dan and the CNA.
KT was presented these gifts at change-of-shift, and about 15-20 staff members attended to provide support and cheer.
Several months ago, when emailing the team to discuss his plans, Dan stated, "my hope is that we can brighten KT's day and show him he's cared about". Goal achieved: KT's day is certainly brightened a bit each day, thanks to Dan, our special CNA, and the wonderful clinical team who cares for him in a truly holistic manner.
