Dan Humphries, RN, MA, RNFA, CNOR has worked diligently for the Surgery Department for many years and has adopted many different roles - RNFA, circulating RN, PACU RN, Pre-op holding RN, transporter, housekeeper, scrub tech, and hall co-coordinator and all with a smile on his face and a great attitude.
A recent patient experience involved a patient who had come through the ED on a weekend with a ruptured spleen and needed transfer to a higher level of care at another hospital. A transport RN was not available, and the patient was unable to transfer without one. Dan volunteered immediately to accompany the patient on the transfer and administer blood and vital care in the ambulance, ensuring the patient received appropriate treatment in a timely manner.
Dan is a valuable resource within the surgery department and he is always ready and willing to help anyone who asks. His approachable manner ensures that any new employees feel they can ask him anything. His caring attitude extends to all who come into contact with him. When he has direct contact with patients he reassures, educates, and makes them feel special. He obsesses about the patient and treats patients as he would like to be treated. His sense of humor is always evident, and patients and staff can often be heard laughing at one of his clever quips.
Whenever there is a late case, a case running over, or an extra pair of hands is needed, he is the go-to person as he rarely says no. He has logged more than 353 hours of overtime in the last 12 months!
Surgeons value his expertise in his role as an RNFA and he is often requested to assist in all types of cases. He is also involved in many committees in the hospital and is a co-chair of our Shared Governance.
The surgery department is a better place for having him as one of its employees and he is a true DAISY Nurse.
