David is the type of nurse who develops a strong rapport with his patients and families. He loves to teach and will ensure that they understand what is going on and what the plan of care is. He strongly advocates for his patients and families and I frequently receive very positive comments from his patients and families. They often request to have him back to care for them. Recently, David was trying to get off on a scheduled day to be with a friend of his who was having a kidney transplant and he was explaining that he could not anticipate the day to request due to being a transplant. After talking more with David, I discovered that this friend was previously a patient of ours, a young man admitted with lung nodules who was on the ventilator for a while (on & off for many days). During this time, David developed a strong rapport with the patient's mother and the patient to help them through this traumatic event. Approximately a month after the patient was discharged, the mother contacted David, as they were having a lot of problems understanding what was going on, and he helped advocate for them and the patient was diagnosed with Goodpasture syndrome, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks the lung and kidneys and can result in kidney failure. The patient was placed on a kidney transplant list and David promised him he would be there with him when he received his transplant. David followed through with his promise and was there for him to support him through the surgery. He has become good friends with him and they talk almost daily on the phone. David made a significant impact on this patient's life and exemplifies professional excellence that extends well beyond the norm. David is also our Wellness Ambassador for CVICU and working on a hydration wellness campaign in CVICU. He is an absolute joy to work with and is very dedicated to nursing!
