Deanna Batt is an extraordinary RN. And I do not use the term loosely. I mean, that she is EXTRA ordinary! She demonstrates deep compassion in her care of some of the sickest patients at RPCI. Her unit cares for patients that are sometimes faced with admissions that last for months at a time, during which they are at their sickest and are separated from family, friends and the comfort of their home. They are stripped of their autonomy and control and in the thick of their trial, Deanna has proven time and time again that she is EXTRA ordinary. How does she do it, you ask? Simple. She approaches every patient with dignity, respect and compassion while personalizing her approach. She gets to know her patients and families. She learns what their interests are, what makes them happy, what calms them, and what is most important to them and she takes that knowledge and personalizes her care.
She makes them feel at home, away from home. She makes them feel like they are family. And after all, they are, aren't they? One of the 5West patients who was describing coming back to 5West at RPCI for follow-up care after a previous stay in this way, "I was at another hospital until there was room available here and it was such a relief to have the doors open up and to see Deanna. It was like loving arms grabbed me and pulled me in at that moment".
Being able to create that type of atmosphere is what makes Deanna EXTRA ordinary.
