Debra works in the Cape Canaveral Hospital Emergency Department and was nominated by one of her fellow nurses as a nurse that exemplifies loving care for every patient, every day. Debra’s co-worker cited several examples of her “healing presence”. This is one example:
Debbie is a compassionate nurse and creates an atmosphere of calm. Recently, a young mother came into the ED with a complaint of shortness of breath and mild chest pain. The patient was alone and thinking that she had pulled a muscle or had some other minor problem. Her work up revealed a more serious problem and the patient was understandably distraught. Debbie asked another nurse to cover for her and sat in the room with the patient listening, providing comfort and praying with her. When the patient left the emergency department, she was the picture of calm serenity.
