It was, after a short time, readily apparent that Derek was going to be my father's "lifeline" in his time of need. He quickly became the center from which everything else seemed to rotate. Derek, at all times, throughout the hours of treatment, displayed an astounding level of compassion, empathy, patience, dedication, and professionalism not only towards my father but, also in his interactions with my mother. He explained everything he was doing and why. He explained what he was seeing and what it meant. He was attentive to my father's pain levels. He kept us informed of progress and possible problems. When he left the room he explained why and how long he would be gone. When he returned he immediately (every time) went straight to my father and asked how he was feeling, what was his pain level. He continuously assessed the situation, checking tubes, checking machines, checking fluids, checking everything! I just need your hospital to know how appreciative we are that Derek was on duty that night and that he was assigned to my father's case. Derek was like an angel for my father (and mother) that night.
