Devin "Super Murse" Murphy and I worked two night shifts back-to-back, and I had a 1:2 patient (ventilator/trach, multiple central line lab draws/urine tests/ turn Q2 with splints, etc.) Devin is always asking if anyone needs help and, even though I always say no, these two particular nights, I did not. He stepped in my patient's room and saw that I was in the throes of multitasking with this vented patient and stated that he would pass my 20:00 meds on my other patient so that I could deal with the tasks at hand. Devin recognized how high of an acuity this young gentleman was and went above and beyond to assist me both nights, so that both of my patients received a superior patient experience these two nights, all the while taking care of his 3 patients and taking an admission both nights. Devin is an exceptional team player and even though he isrelatively new to St. Louis Children's, he really does do what is right for kids.
As I was giving direct patient care to my higher acuity patient, Devin stepped in, without me asking, and took care of my other patient, so that I could continue to care for my higher acuity patient.This allowed me to build a relationship with the family and the patient, as he had just been transferred to the 12th floor from the PICU. As the family was dealing with a devastating diagnosis, to be able to have that extra time to spend with the patient and family spoke volumes. I feel proud to be working with such a dedicated coworker.
