Diane Milliken contributes to a positive work environment through interactions with staff and patients. She provides consistent, quality care every day to every patient. She is a true leader for our endoscopy team.
Procedure nurses often get overlooked due to the nature of their skill set and atmosphere. However, Diane truly combines the art and science of nursing. There is not a greater patient advocate that I know of. Diane treats every patient as if they were her family. She comforts, supports and builds trust so patients immediately feel safe and cared for. I have had the honor of watching her guide families through the end of life process, supporting them and never losing sight of the importance of being present. She is a true believer that no one should die alone.
As an endoscopy nurse, I have watched her sooth a patient who was so hypertensive the procedure should have been stopped, but she just calmly held his hand, got right down face-to-face with him, telling him "It's going to be alright. I am right here, and we are getting through this together." Within minutes the patient relaxed, and the procedure proceeded. He just kept thanking her for being there and not giving up on him. Diane will advocate for the right thing every time, regardless of the situation or barrier. She does not want any patient not to receive safe quality care.
Diane's ability to make an unpleasant situation into a great experience is resonated by patient comments about her ability to support them when they were at their worst. She is a natural teacher both to peers and patients. Patients comment about how prepared they are when Diane is their nurse. They have a full understanding of what to expect and why things will happen. New nurses say that Diane emphasizes the importance of connecting, making the patient feel that they are the most important person in the room and that she has their back no matter what.
A DAISY Nurse is someone that not only makes a difference to the patient but those around her, she is a leader, the spark, and the heart. Diane is truly a DAISY.
