Dorothy is a longtime Dekalb, RN (27 Years) and has seen many changes during her near 3 decades on 3600. Dorothy remains positive through change and encourages others to do the same. Dorothy's the first to calm nerves and support the organization through transition.
Dorothy connects with patients of all ages. Patients often request her by name to be their caregiver for the day. She puts patients at ease with herwarm smile, confident spirit, and vast rehab knowledge. Dorothy is a Rehab Certified Nurse and uses this advanced knowledge to care for and educate our patients. She is the most recognized RN during discharge follow up calls on our team.
Our Manager received a call from a former spinal cord injured patient (18 years old) informing me that "I would have never made it without Dorothy's kindness and encouragement." The patient stated, "My Dorothy is the best."
Dorothy serves Dekalb in many roles: Relief Charge Nurse, active SMART team member, Peer Interview Team Member and Preceptor. Dorothy is comfortable coaching peers and subordinates to standards and success.
Dorothy believes it's her responsibility to be the keeper of our culture and recognizes that it takes us all to ensure our team is the best and our patients receive the best care; she readily coaches others.
She has great critical thinking skills and responds quickly and appropriately to medical emergencies; remaining calm and setting the tone for others. She is collaborative with our interdisciplinary team, is respected and trusted by the medical team and is sought after for her expertise by peers.
We recently had a code Cincinnati (Stoke) on the unit while Dorothy was in charge. Despite the MD deviating from established protocols, Dorothy ensured the patient received excellent care and facilitated a swift transfer to a higher level of care without any damage to the RN/MD relationship.
Dorothy can be counted on for additional shifts to ensure the patients are cared for and the unit staffing levels are maintained adequately. She is flexible with time and tasks and is always looking for ways to support leadership and improve our team.
She is passionate about excellent care, positive patient outcomes and supporting her work family. Leaders relax when Dorothy is working as the patients are in good hands.
