As I now enter the last few weeks of my life, I have tried to thank the many loving and kind medical staff who have served me and my wife these past 6-7 years. E-Chiao came on the scene and began performing my weekly paracentesis procedure for the next 5 ½ years until recently.
E-Chiao was very supportive during all the times I was down and discouraged and needed special counsel, or I needed medication to help alleviate the pain I was experiencing. He knew each of our children, our plans, and the family drama. The more I thanked him for his loving, professional courtesies, the more he would heap kind and generous service that was not expected or probably deserved. I would dread the times he was called away to professional conferences or take a planned and well-deserved vacation.
We rejoiced when E-Chiao found a loving woman to share his life with and how he treated her with great dignity and respect. I saw those same qualities in E-Chiao as he cared for his ailing and fragile mother. I never witnessed E-Chiao disrespecting anyone to their face or behind their backs. He was always calm, deliberate, and the utmost professional in carrying forward his duties and responsibilities.
Often, I would observe E-Chiao interacting with other staff members and marvel at what a magnificent soul this man has. The VAMC and us Vets have so much to be grateful for that E-Chiao has crossed our paths in mortality.
As an amusing side-note, often I would have my paracentesis done by a medical doctor with so much more experience than what E-Chiao has garnered. These doctors would be somewhat miffed that they could do it more efficiently. Then I would share with them how E-Chiao would lessen the initial pain caused by the needle being inserted into my abdomen or how he would use "DermaBond" to glue the insertion site.
After they saw the effect and wisdom of his techniques, these doctors would thank me for sharing that information. When I would tell E-Chiao how I taught his techniques to others, he would shrink with genuine embarrassment.
