There are around 80 nurses in operating room level 2. Everyone is doing well with regards to patient care but there will always be someone who excels and gives extra care to patients. Her name is Emelyn Guzman. She always prioritizes patient safety utilizing the safety goals and safety checklist all the time. She makes sure that patients are being strapped in bed considering the risk of fall while being put to sleep. She tries her best to communicate with the patient and utilizes staff who can speak Arabic in order to convey the message she needed to tell the patient. Or sometimes I just see her standing next to the anxious patient and holding their hand empathizing. She is meticulous with how the gel pads and other positioning device are being applied over the patient so as not to develop pressure ulcer regardless whether it’s a short or long procedure. She maintains patient dignity by exposing only body part needed for surgery and only at time it needed to be exposed.
She makes sure that supplies and items needed for surgery are readily available and anticipates well of patient’s condition such as keeping the patient warm with the use of bairhugger, applying scd to avoid complication for long surgery procedures. She always makes herself being readily available to attend to the needs of the scrub nurse. She watches over the surgical team and tells them to wear their mask or the scrub team to be de-contaminated so as to prevent surgical infection. She is a role model and most of all approachable to be asked questions and willing to give a hand all the time. I always find it lovely working with her because she always gives the best possible care on her patients where patients don’t get to see since they are asleep. These are only some of the reasons why she deserves the DAISY Award.
