Fawzia has been the primary nurse for her patient for almost one year. When the patient first arrived, he was very deconditioned and mainly nonverbal, although he answered a few questions in English. Fawzia is uniquely suited to care for the patient because she is able to communicate with him in Farsi, his primary language. The patient's family is unable to visit him, although they occasionally call. Fawzia provides familiarity and a sense of connection by caring for the patient every time she works and speaking to him in his native language.
Initially, her patient refused to eat most meals. Fawzia encourages him to eat, offering him nutritional options in chocolate, his favorite flavor. She has been able to persuade him to increase his intake as she patiently coaches him to take "one more bite."
As the months have passed, the patient has gained strength and became more interactive. Unfortunately, he has become more challenging to care for due to increased physical and verbal aggression. Fawzia continues to care for him while others ask for a reprieve. Fawzia's kindness and compassion in caring for a difficult patient are evident in all the care that is simply routine for Fawzia. Her calm voice in their shared language is effective whether she is setting boundaries or easing his fears. While bathing the patient in what can best be described as a well-orchestrated wrestling match, she reassures the patient that he is safe. She comforts him when he resists care, explaining what she is doing.
Fawzia exemplifies the traits of a primary nurse and provides care worthy of the DAISY Award every day she works.
