Fernando is a highly skilled Neuro ICU nurse that is capable of caring for all levels of acuity in the ICU. However, it is his unique warmth, compassion and innate calming qualities that make him truly a very special nurse. Fernando is routinely recognized and praised by patients and families during rounding. This is literally on a shift-weekly basis. His patients and families consistently request him and are disappointed when he is off.
A patient's family was upset about an incident but calmed and could not say enough praise for Fernando regarding the care his father received from him. He is consistently referred to as "unique" and "special" and "compassionate" with regards to the compassion and sincerity he gives to his patients. I do not have one major deed, incident or act that I can refer to, but what makes Fernando special is his consistency. Fernando does this day in and day out.
Additionally, Fernando is a preceptor who is very much appreciated by his orientees. They routinely refer to him as "patient", "wonderful" and "knowledgeable". He is a terrific team player who is always willing to help. When bed alarms are going off, CRRT machines beeping, monitors alarming showing arrhythmias, call bells blaring, Careview safety alerts screaming, or phones ringing, he is routinely one of the first people in the room to assist. I have never seen him pass a call bell or not be more than willing to help a co-worker, patient or family. His team members cannot praise him or appreciate him enough. He is very much viewed as a resource and asset to the team. And if that is not enough, even more impressive than his skill or his compassion is his humility. I am honored and proud to work with him every day.
