Mrs. Georgia Freeman was selected as the June 2013 Maryview Medical Center DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses Honoree. She has been a loyal, dedicated employee for 35 years, and she portrays the Bon Secours mission of being "Good Help to Those in Need." She goes above and beyond the call of duty with all of her patients and co-workers.
On a recent discharge phone call a patient said that "she felt terrified of being diagnosed with cancerthat Mrs. Georgia Freeman came in the room, assured her that everything was going to be okayShe is not just a nurse, she is a mother. She nurtures her patients back to health like a motherwhich allowed me to stop focusing on my new cancer diagnosis, and focus on getting better so I could go home to my husband and grandchildren. She should be called the mother of the unit."
She not only nurtures her patients she is a great help to different departments, co-workers, and physicians. One Environmental Services employees said she is a great asset in making sure that the bedflow runs efficiently. One CNA stated that she is reliable, a good resource, and you know when you work with her you are going to have a good day. Dr. Eric Freeman stated "I have worked with Mrs Freeman for many years and not in one situation, but whenever I am working with Mrs. Freeman I have been struck by how she treats her patients. She treats her patients with sincere friendliness, concern, and manages to put her patients at ease and at the same time provides them with a sense of dignity when they are vulnerable and frequently scared." She has been an inspiration to new graduates as well as veteran nurses. One new graduate stated "Mrs. Georgia went out of her way to make sure I knew how to use the blood warmer. She is never too busy to help her co-workers." Mrs. Freeman has always said "I want to make sure that you all are trained properly because one day you will have to be my nurse." I think she needs to be recognized for her expertise, wisdom, and loyalty to Maryview. I feel that she is the mother of 5 South because she has a nurturing soul. Her motto is "If I can help one person along the way, then my living will not be in vain."
On the day of the DAISY Award Ceremony, Georgia was also honored by a local TV News Station with the Channel 3 News People in Action Award which will be aired on 7/2/2013.
