I took my husband to the VA for a monthly lab test. As a caretaker for my disabled husband for the past few years, I was feeling distressed and overwhelmed. For the past few years, I have been trying to get some form of relief or assistance. I had been to a caretakers meeting and even met with a couple of social workers in Arizona but was told there was no assistance for me. So, we moved back to Minnesota where I knew our children would give me some help.
I walked up to the Volunteers at the VA and asked them if there was anyone I could speak to and they gave me a couple of phone numbers. I then started to walk down the hall and was approached by a VA worker. He introduced himself as Jerry and asked if he could help me. I said "I don't think so", he then repeated it and said, "I think I can help you. Just let me try." I explained my predicament and he told me to wait a minute and he would return. In just a few seconds he returned and took me to an office where he got on the computer, looked up my husband's information and proceeded to offer me more services than I knew were even available.
In the next few weeks, we met with so many disciplines that were so helpful and things are going so much better. Thank you to Jerry for being so persistent in helping us. I thank him for recognizing that I needed help and being persistent because I had just about given up.
