Gina Chiosie RN was on her way home from work. While driving she looked up and saw a person waving. She noticed a car turned over so she turned around and drove to the site. She climbed over the guard rail and stayed with the woman driver, who was trapped in her car. During the approximate 45 minutes it took to extricate the victim safely, Gina supported the victim's airway by holding her jaw and face. By doing this she was able to feel the victim's breath on her hands (to ascertain breathing) and held her jaw, to secure her airway. The victim was unconscious during the entire time that Gina was caring for her. Gina had actually climbed into the car and had positioned her body in such a way that she was able to accomplish this feat. Gina then continued to maintain the victim even during the time it took for the rescuers to cut her out of the vehicle. The rescuers covered Gina and the victim with blankets, so as to keep them safe from flying metal as they cut around them. Once the victim awakened briefly and Gina reassured her that her baby was OK and out of the car, then she became flaccid again.
Gina Chiosie should receive the DAISY Award as she exemplified true caring and compassion for this victim. Also, with great peril for her own safety. Gina also incurred bruises on her torso from the positioning of her own body during this ordeal. Gina was on the front page of The Record the following day.
