We experienced the exceptional nursing care provided to my mother on 2 hospitalizations to CVU at Winter Haven Hospital by Heather Adcock. After a bad fall, my mother was admitted to CVU because of her history of heart problems. It was a busy day on the unit, Heather came in and introduced herself and said the assigned nurse was busy with another patient so she would complete the nursing assessment. Heather came back around 7 pm and she washed the dried blood from my mother's hair and head for a good hour after her shift was over. Later the next day, Heather came in to check on my mother, even though it was not her assignment. I asked her to look at her left hand that was swollen from the tight wrap on her fractured wrist because I was concerned that her rings could not be removed. Lotion was tried, that didn't work. The string/thread trick was next. She worked diligently over and over and finally the persistence paid off because miraculously the rings came off providing my mother with relief. We again thanked Heather for taking time and going above and beyond to help my mother.
In January my mother was again admitted to the CVU. I ran into Heather on the third day getting my mother ready for discharge. I told her that my family had been waiting for the doctor to call back with the discharge plan. The nurse who is assigned to my mother today said there was no news yet. Heather said she would text the doctor for the update since the doctors respond to them quickly. A little while passed and Heather returned to say the doctor did respond to her text and he would be returning to the hospital to meet with them to discuss the discharge plan. The doctor met with us for over 30 minutes and he recommended palliative care. In walks Heather, just when I needed her, she has impeccable timing. Heather took it upon herself to call the palliative care nurse, but there was no answer, so she went to the palliative care office to see if she could find her and left instructions for her to see my mother the next day.
Heather has been in the right place at the right time taking initiative needed to make things happen for my mother. Heather is a DAISY Nurse for her truly extraordinary compassionate nursing care.
