Heather made a connection with a postpartum patient, who was having some postpartum depression. She had an unplanned pregnancy with an abusive boyfriend. Both mom and baby were discharged and the mom developed an infection at the C-section site and developed pneumonia all within the first 2 weeks of baby's birth. She arrived on our floor with a wound vac and very sick. The patient had a rough first night, and Heather came in as Assistant Nurse Manager that day. She learned that the patient had not had a baby shower and did not feel that she was deserving of a shower. When I rounded on her today, she told me that Heather came in, took charge and brightened up her day, and helped her to get in the "right mind", so she could care for her new baby. Once Heather found out about her not having a baby shower, Heather put some things together and presented the patient with them. The patient told me later today that she felt so overwhelmed with appreciation that a total stranger had that much compassion for her, that she did not know what to say. Heather said, "everyone deserves a baby shower."
