The couple returned to our unit, the Birth Place, for a scheduled induction. Two years ago, they delivered a baby boy that was a demise. On that day, the couple arrived to the unit to discover there was no heart rate for their baby boy.
Tonight, during my discussion with them, they have a fond memory of our staff - they remember staff crying when this was discovered, they voiced details of that night - "we could not have handpicked a group of finer people to help us deal with our loss".
The couple remembered the names of the staff: Heather Oakes, Christina Nies, Holly Campbell, and Garnett Wood. They voiced their contentment in knowing the same nurses were still part of our Birth Place team and were eager for them to take care of them now during a happy time! Heather was here during the day and volunteered to be the nurse. She also agreed to come in on her day off to be able to support them during this delivery. Christina Nies offered to follow Heather and allow continuity of care.
I believe our Bon Secours' value of compassion is demonstrated by this commitment of our staff. In our area of labor and delivery we are faced with many happy events but there are unhappy events we face such as a demise - that brings us close to our families.
It makes me proud to know this family has trust and fond memories of what we did for them during this unfortunate event. It also makes me proud that they have chosen to return to our unit tonight to deliver their baby girl!
Team members honored with this DAISY Award:Heather Oakes, Christina Nies, Holly Campbell, and Garnett Wood.
