Our almost 12-year-old daughter had her third spine surgery. Our amazing nurse, Jamie Arakelyan, has been very caring and kind. My daughter was in pain, very uncomfortable and tense. Today, she went to physical therapy and truly did a great job following direction. When she returned and laid down, she vomited all over the bed, her gown and part of her hair. Jamie was very kind and cleaned her up. Jamie put clean sheets on the bed, made her feel very comfortable with a very kind, calm and lovely tone of voice. Then Jamie asked if she wanted to have her hair washed. I was thinking we are going to just wipe off her hair; however, Jamie suggested that she would wash her hair. Jamie washed my daughter's hair, put baby oil on it since I did not have conditioner with me and combed her hair. She got all the tangles out with such grace that she did not once feel pain. Jamie made her smile and laugh. I had not seen my daughter this happy in days prior to surgery. My daughter became alive again as if she was not experiencing any pain and then fell asleep while Jamie was combing her hair. Jamie gave my daughter so much love and care that I can't summarize what kind of a nurse Jamie is to this department. Jamie was assigned to my daughter two shifts and when we saw Jamie walking in the door the second day, we were both very a happy and hugged her. Every single time my daughter has had surgery, we have come across some wonderful nurses; however, Jamie stands out in the entire team of nurses we have met at CHLA. I love the fact that she actually listens to my daughter's needs and does not take them for granted. In turn, my daughter feels taken care of and follows her direction. Jamie truly cares about her little patients and you can feel that this is not just a job to her. Since my daughter had several congenital anomalies, I would never leave my daughter in anyone else's care; however, Jamie is the first person whom I would leave her with, knowing that she would treat my child with dignity and respect. Jamie is a stunning example of what the nursing profession values.
