Jannell is what I envisioned as what I thought a nurse should be when I decided to become one 28 years ago. She is the most caring and patient nurse I have ever worked with or witnessed. She truly puts her patients first for the entire 12+ hours of her shift. It is nothing for her to explain the same thing over and over again to a patient or family and never get upset. She is the nurse who will sit by a frightened patient's bedside most of the night, even if it means doing her charting there, just so the patient knows someone cares and is there with them. She treats each and every patient with respect and dignity. She is a great advocate who will fight for what is right for that particular patient even if it is not the most popular opinion. She is the nurse who rubs patients' backs and feet, fluffs pillows, and holds their hands. She will laugh and celebrate their victories and also cry and share the grief with those who are entrusted to her care. She will bring things from home or the store for patients, families, and co-workers. One particular instance occurred when Jannell was caring for a mentally handicapped patient. The patient was very restless and she sat with him most of the night. She recognized that he was bored and asked what he liked to do. The next night, she stopped at the store and bought him coloring books and crayons. His face lit up when she presented them to him and he had a peaceful, quiet night. Jannell is very positive for staff morale as well and is always willing to cheer someone up by a kind word, a hug, or a small gift or card. She is who I thought of when this award was first announced. To me, Jannell is THE Daisy nurse!
