I was admitted to University Hospital with Flu B, atrial fibrillation, chills, fever, and intractable stomach pain. By the evening, the pains grew worse and bouts of nausea and vomiting occurred.
During three nights, I was cared for by Ms. Jannica Bacus and I cannot adequately express my gratitude to her for the care she took of me.
After each bout of vomiting, she was right there at my side, to clean me, to change the bed and clean the floor. At one point, she put me into a chair, the better to massage my back and arms to help me feel better.
Ms. Bacus performed all these tasks with patience, compassion and caring. What further impressed me was the fact that she never left my bedside without asking if there was anything else she could do for me or if there was any need I had.
All this for a patient old enough to be her grandmother. When I tried to express my regret at causing her so much extra work, her response was so simple, "You are very sick. I will take care of you." And take care of me she did.
When one is elderly, as I am, sick and in pain, the human touch is so very important as are words of encouragement. We are vulnerable at such times, both physically and emotionally, but to have a nurse like Ms. Bacus, at least for me, is to have a lifeline of support and the tenderness she showed me still can move me to tears.
In your advertising, you use the slogan, a mission statement, if you will - "Insist on the best. Insist on University."
You have the best in a tiny little nurse who is the embodiment of your words. You should be very proud of this young woman. I know I am better for having been in her care.
It is a pleasure, an honor and a privilege for me to nominate Ms. Jannica Bacus for this award in recognition of superior nursing care which was rendered in a professional manner but also it spoke of her caring and the deep desire to heal her patients.
"Insist on the best. Insist on University." You already have the best.
