My sister is 79 years old, mentally and physically challenged, incontinent and suffers from post-polio syndrome. She is generally one of the friendliest people at Bayley Place in Delhi. She knows everyone as either Buddy or Sweety and thinks like a 5 year old. For the past few years she's experienced kidney issues and sepsis and recently had stones removed twice at the Same Day Surgery Center.
In mid-October, my husband and I were in the waiting area when we were buzzed to see her in PACU. As we approached her, we could tell that her nurse, Jenna, had already established an excellent rapport, even though she was still partially under the anesthesia. Jenna could not have been more friendly, personable, professional, caring and understanding. We could tell immediately Jenna was totally devoted to taking the best care possible of my sister and the other patient or two she was responsible for. She informed us of her condition and what we could expect as she was being transferred to an inpatient status. As she continued her recovery in PACU, she gave Jenna a "thumbs up" and remarked "she's sweet." Soon after, my sister was transferred to her inpatient room.
In November, my sister had her second recent stone experience. We had already turned in our buzzer before talking to the Doctor when we found out she'd be an inpatient again. As we approached the Surgery desk, to our surprise, Jenna was already there looking for my sister's relatives. She'd been with her during her early recovery, immediately recognized her and continued to care for her as if she'd never left. We were really impressed with her sensitivity, caring and understanding attitude.
For example, one of the other patients was experiencing problems and she along with other nurses assisted. When the situation was under some semblance of control, Jenna popped back in just to make sure my sister was OK, and then continued to assist the other patient. The hospital was full and there were no inpatient rooms immediately available, but we knew she was in Jenna's caring hands as we traveled back home while my sister waited in PACU to be fully admitted.
In our frequent visits to Christ Hospital over the past few years, just about everyone has been friendly, caring and professional, but Jenna Deskins stands out among the others. She epitomizes the care and compassion of only the best RNs, thanks again Jenna.
