If you need an example of a nurse who is willing to wear whatever hat is needed to make sure patients receive the best care possible, you need look no further than Jenny Bodner. Many across the campus know Jenny as she worked for many years in the Roster program and was a welcome sight to any unit. Jenny has filled the role as inpatient transplant coordinator being the consistent care provider bridging the inpatient and outpatient transplant worlds. She helps equip new transplant patients with the tools and resources to successfully take on a whole new treatment regimen following transplant.
Jenny created the patient specialized medication sheets that aide the patient to learn their new complicated medication routine. A recent transplant patient asked Jenny, "Can I get a blank of the form we use, my mom has so many medications she has to take and this system works so well for me I know it will for her too!"
Upon discharge from the hospital, Jenny will see the patient for the first several outpatient clinic visits continuing the teaching started in the hospital and easing their transition prior to reporting off to the outpatient transplant coordinator. But that's not all Jenny does.
She has been active for years in the Transplant QAPI program and continues to benchmark reports. In the past 2 years Jenny has become our primary player in the HCMC Transplant Outreach Program, called Explore Transplant, taking education about transplant to patients and their health care team members. She has been invited to provide an information table in dialysis unit's waiting rooms, displaying information at dialysis nurse and social worker conferences and health fairs, setting up education days for dialysis personnel to help not only patients with kidney disease but also their healthcare providers better understand the transplant process and treatment options available.
Jenny takes a rotation as on call coordinator for kidney offers, is learning and taking on living donor caseload and provides orientation about transplant to new HCMC nursing staff that care for transplant patients. Jenny is a very talented and valuable employee who is always ready to help and is a strong patient advocate for our patients and transplant program at HCMC.
