After my father was admitted for pancreatitis, I was in contact with my family about his condition. During our conversation, my mother mentioned on more than one occasion the wonderful care he was getting. Specifically, she remarked how wonderful one of the nurses had been during this difficult time.
Later that evening, my family got the dreaded news that there was a high likelihood he had cholangiocarcinoma, and he was not in good shape. I got on a plane the next day traveling in from out of state and came to the hospital. After seeing my father, my family again told me how Jenny May came in on her day off with her dog. They raved about how her kindness and support helped brighten my family's spirits.
The next day Jenny May was working and I finally got to meet her. She started the day off with a big hug for each member of the family including me. She explained the day's plans, addressed all our needs and ensured that my father was attended to. He underwent a procedure that day and there was some confusion as to the result. She immediately became our advocate and reached out to the PA to have her come and visit with us to help clear up the confusion.
During this difficult time, Jenny May supported our family. She went above and beyond. More than just making sure my father's medicines were on time, IV was running or his drain was emptied. She made sure our family's mental and emotional health was taken care of. She told us stories about her family, a recent daughter's wedding, and her cabin. She never entered the room without a smile or a kind word of support. She never left the room without first asking each of us if we needed anything. She even called on her day off to check on how he was doing.
As a physician, I have heard many times "treat each patient as you would want your family member treated." Jenny May is the epitome of this statement. Within minutes of meeting her, she enveloped me and I felt as if a member of my family was taking care of us. I truly feel that my family would not have gotten through such a difficult time without her love, support, and dedication.
