After two months in the ICU following a severe car crash, my mother, an Army Veteran, arrived in the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Unit. Jessica was assigned as her primary nurse. She immediately got in step with my mom's needs and care by rapidly adjusting expectations to reality. Further, she shepherded our family with compassion into the VA system. Consistently, Jess has demonstrated professional maturity by anticipating my mom's needs while balancing flexibility as my mom's condition changes almost daily. Jess has remained a steadfast advocate, routinely engaging doctors, nursing staff and specialists to advocate for my mom's needs and preferred care methods. She is generous with her time spent listening to my mom and us when we have questions or concerns, she does the heavy lifting to ensure there is consistency across all shifts; even hanging signs to help remind others of my mom's specific needs if she is sleeping. Additionally, and maybe most importantly, Jess has shown humanity and dignity during a situation in which we never expected to find ourselves. She takes care to guard my mother's feelings, modesty and being. This is a skill which cannot be taught; it is an art form inherent to who Jess is as a person. Jess once told us her nurse manager asked her before my mom's arrival if she was up to the task of handling a difficult case (as my mother has polytrauma injuries). From what we experienced; Jess has not only been up to the task but conducts herself with the seasoned professionalism of someone who has been in nursing for decades. She has not only met our expectations of care but exceeds them daily. She works with abundant care and empathy, which make us proud and thankful to have Jess on our team.
