My son was born at Swedish Ballard in September. We had been in the hospital for 4 days and received great care from several midwives and nurses. Because of our extended stay we were getting to know the staff quite well. We were lucky enough to have Jessie earlier in our stay at the hospital and then again the night of our baby's delivery. What l was most impressed with throughout our stay at Swedish Ballard was our caregivers' genuine focus on compassion. Not having spent much time in a hospital prior to this experience I would've expected the staff to lack the patience it takes to answer the same questions and concerns over and over and over again. Or to become complacent in response to a patient or family members concerns who are clearly not as educated or as experienced as the hospital staff. It takes a special type of caregiver to excel at being present and understanding the experience from the patient's perspective. Swedish rocks at this.
Jessie was a perfect example of this type of caregiver. When we needed her, she was there immediately with a genuine concern and willingness to aid. She listened. She was kind. And she taught my wife and me how to be parents during the first night with our baby boy. I will forever be thankful for that. When the monitors weren't getting the right reads she was there to make sure our baby was safe. She taught us how to breastfeed our baby. Taught me how to swaddle my child and change his diaper. Allowed to us to sleep, a bit, but also caringly encouraged me to get my "Daddy pants" on and let me know that this is my baby and this is what life's going to be like.
All of this happened within a 12-hour shift. And I know we 1 of 100's or 1,000's she has taken care of. She laughed with us. All the while making sure our baby boy stayed healthy and alive! And she took amazing care of my wife too who had dealt with a placental abruption, 48 hours of induction, a C-Section, and a bag of Magnesium Sulfate for preeclampsia to top it all off. I am thankful to have had her as our nurse and more importantly my wife inspired me to make sure she was acknowledged for her elite level of care. We can't thank her enough, and I know it's just another day on the job for her, which is absolutely amazing to me.
