While making rounds on our CCU patients, Joann engaged the granddaughter of a patient who was nearing the end of life due to her chronic medical conditions. The granddaughter, who was in nursing school, had been the patient's primary caregiver. She told Joann that she had hoped her grandmother would live long enough to place her nursing pin on her uniform when she graduated from nursing school. She understood it was not likely that grand mom would be able to do that. Joann was on a "mission" to make the "pinning ceremony" happen for both the patient and her granddaughter. Joann started scrounging for an appropriate pin to use for our own ceremony. When we could not assist in providing just the right thing, she went to the hospital gift shop and found a "pin" in the shape of a heart with the words "follow your heart" on the back. Joann then arranged for RT to take the patient off BiPap and to go on Hiflow O2. The patient was able to Skype with her son and to "pin" her granddaughter. With the patient's permission, Joann took pictures on the granddaughter's phone to commemorate the event. Both granddaughter and patient expressed gratitude for this very special moment that allowed them to share their love. Joann's sensitivity to this family's needs makes her a standout role model for our team. This is an extraordinary example of true "caring" and compassion.
