After having surgery at the University of Kansas Hospital, I stayed on Unit 53. During my stay, I was tachycardic and my HCT became critically low. Nurse Jody informed me that I would have to have a blood transfusion. Unsure of what my reaction to the news would be, Nurse Jody displayed a remarkable level of empathy that I am sure to value in the years.
The wish not to have blood transfusions is not based on religious beliefs or deep ethical principles. I just don't like the idea. In fact, I became a pharmacist so I would not have to deal with blood and secretions.
Which brings us to the conversation Jody and I had early in the morning. She sat at the bedside and explained everything in detail like I was the only patient she had and like it was not early in the morning. I shared with her my thoughts and just my overall feeling of being squeamish about seeing the blood. In turn, Nurse Jody ensured I saw no blood what-so-ever by covering the machine and bag with a gown, as well as, the tubing with paper towels and tape.
I can imagine the other duties Nurse Jody may have had. Therefore, to take the time to appease my nerves in receiving a blood transfusion in the manner she did is truly compassionate. Nurse Jody went above and beyond to ensure my comfort and exhibits passion in the delivery of excellent nursing care.
