I wanted to personally bring Joe to your attention as an above-and-beyond nurse. My brother is currently a patient at BSA. He has been challenging at best as he was suffering from hallucinations during the first 48 hours of his stay due to critical lab values. He was frightened and angry with a distrust of everyone. He immediately connected with his night nurse, Joe. He liked and trusted Joe due to his calm, friendly demeanor and knowledge.
One morning I think a code strong was involved in subduing my brother. It took me an hour and a half to calm him down afterward and convince him to stay in the hospital. He had pulled out his IV and NG tube. Joe was contacted at home and came in 2 hours prior to the start of his shift in order to re-start the IV. He was just about the only person my brother trusted at that point.
This whole ordeal has been very stressful for us as a family. It is not easy to see a family member in this condition. Joe helped relieve much of our anxiety. My brother is better and is now just ornery. Joe helped us get past the hurdle of the hallucinations that made everything so frightening for an old man with cancer. We are extremely grateful he was able to get much needed antibiotics and a blood transfusion which helped him immensely. I am proud that Joe is a colleague and hope that when the day comes that I am a patient, my nurse will be as good as Joe.
