My 27-year-old son suffered a severe asthma attack leaving him on life support in the ICU at The Medical Center. I live in New York, so when my daughter called, I took the next flight to Kentucky. After arriving, I quickly realized that all I would be able to do was wait and pray that my son was in good hands. I prayed the doctors and nurses would treat him with the utmost care and help my son to the best of their ability. While each member of the staff took his condition to heart and went above and beyond their line of duty, one nurse, in particular, stood out among the rest, Jordan Keen.
When Jordan introduced himself to me, he told me he would be open and honest with us, words Jordan would stand by throughout my son's treatment and beyond. At such an overwhelming and difficult time, it was extremely important to have someone trustworthy, professional, knowledgeable, caring and compassionate taking care of my son. Jordan welcomed all our questions and explained everything in a manner in which we could understand. From that moment I knew my prayers were answered.
After days of being unable to pull away, when I finally needed some time to step away, I did so in peace knowing Jordan was taking care of my son. On one occasion I returned to find that he had bathed him, changed the linens and even took the time to wash and dry his hair. He smelled and looked amazing. Jordan knew how much it meant to me to see my son that way; looking so vibrant and fresh; it truly meant the world to me. It's a small gesture; however, it's the small actions that separate the good from the great, and Jordan was full of small gestures.
Jordan would often find me in tears next to my son when he entered the room. He knew just the right words to calm and console me.
My son was an organ donor, and when it came time to prepare for surgery, I was extremely impressed in the manner in which Jordan handled himself during the whole process. He explained to me what was going to happen throughout the evening. As I observed him, I could see he had a well-organized plan in his mind. The manner in which he executed his plan made everything seem so flawless. Jordan showed his strong leadership skills.
What amazed me, even more, was when it was time for my son to be taken to the operating room, Jordan knew, without me having to say a thing, that I needed him in that operating room with my son. He stayed with my son throughout the operation. It gave me great comfort to know someone with such an amazing heart would be there with my son.
