Judy was the Administrative Coordinator on duty when she overheard a young woman looking for a Chaplin. Judy knew the Chaplin was not at the hospital at that time; she noticed the woman was carrying a young child and was pregnant, and she thought it may be a safe haven situation. Judy asked the woman if she could help. The woman told Judy she was from California, and she had come to Louisiana to meet the baby's father who worked off shore. Judy learned that the woman called the baby's father many times, but he did not show up to meet her and he stopped taking her calls. She told Judy that she had visited a local church, and she was unable to find a place to stay because all the shelters were full for the night. The staff at the church suggested she visit a hospital and see if a Chaplin could help.
The woman explained to Judy that she had a bus ticket back to California, but did not have a place to sleep for the night. Judy did not want to turn the woman away, so she made arrangements and personally paid for the woman and her son to sleep at a local hotel. Judy also paid for their meals and gave the woman money to pay for a ride to the bus station the next morning. Judy saw a woman in need and did not need to know the whole story to decide whether to help. Judy knew the woman and her young son needed assistance, and she took it upon herself to intervene and make a difference.
