In our department, Kanesha fills many roles, including working as a nurse in our clinic and serving as a coordinator of our brachytherapy program (a special type of radiation treatment for cancer). As brachytherapy coordinator, she takes on a great many responsibilities ranging from broad and programmatic to small and routine. She has helped us research new brachytherapy technologies, gone on site visits to evaluate new systems, communicated with vendors, written a workflow document, coordinated meetings, and created patient educational material. Because she is so effective, Kanesha has become the default "go to" person for almost everything. She does all of this while keeping up with her daily duties of scheduling patients, keeping our equipment ready, medical documentation and, of course, regular nursing duties.
Gynecology brachytherapy involves performing procedures that are both physically uncomfortable and sometimes distressing for patients. Yet Kanesha is always there running a busy program punctually, greeting patients with a smile, and being supportive and attentive, and always acting as the patient advocate. She is perpetually available to patients; she even forwards her phone calls if she plans to be away from her desk, so patients can reach her instead of voicemail. We frequently hear from patients how happy that have been with their treatment and the care they have received, and Kanesha is a huge reason why.
