It was a nightmarish day in the Emergency Department. A 7-month old baby was found lifeless in his crib by his father after naptime. The rescue squad and paramedics worked tirelessly to resuscitate the beautiful baby boy. In the Dover Emergency Department, the nurses and physicians did their best but unfortunately the child passed away.
The young couple, both in their early twenties were in shock. The mother's wails were heard throughout the Emergency Department. The Emergency Department staff, tearful and broken, kept on trying to work through their shift without falling apart.
Karen Andrews took control as the Cornerstone of the ED Staff; assisting the young mother and trying to support her overwhelming grief. Karen literally caught the mother as she slipped onto the floor in a fit of emotion, quietly cradling the mother in her arms as she sobbed and wailed uncontrollably. Karen did not leave her side. She helped to quiet the mother and promised to take care of her baby boy during this difficult time.
In addition to taking care of the baby boy, Karen was supportive of this family who were all gathered together in the Emergency Department. She took over the all-consuming care of this young family during this horrific event. She showed compassion and love to help the young parents let go of their baby boy.
A few weeks later, the young mother returned to the ED to present Karen with a little plant that had an angel resting in it. The mother told Karen how grateful she was to have her support on that awful day.
