It is with great pleasure that I highly recommend Karin Fewel, RN, for the DAISY Award. Karin has recently presented a “Chemo with Karen” class to the pediatric and pediatric intensive care nurses here at Roseville, Women and Children’s Center. She has presented this class, on several occasions, to accommodate all shifts. This class has brought chemotherapy administration “alive” to the otherwise dormant chemotherapy certification class.

Her commitment and strong dedication to provide safe chemotherapy administration to our pediatric oncology population is well received by the nurses on the pediatric and pediatric intensive care units. I am currently a chemo certified nurse for over two years but I can only count on one hand how many times I have administered chemotherapy agents in the PICU. I am always a little apprehensive and on my ‘heels’ when I have to administer chemotherapy. However, after taking her two hour class that was exceptionally presented with ‘pearls of wisdom’ and return hands on demonstration techniques in accordance with APHON guidelines. I can definitely appreciate her nine plus years of experience in giving chemotherapy to our pediatric population.

Karin’s chemo class was practical in approach to our clinical setting. I learned invaluable techniques and will remember her class for future chemotherapy administration. She even provided snacks and presented the class in a warm and friendly manner to our new chemo certified nurses. Her professionalism and caring approach allowed for questions and concerns. Her handouts were very insightful and provide a quick reference to chemotherapy administration. Experienced and novice chemotherapy nurses and even non-chemo certified nurses were in attendance at her non-mandatory “Chemo with Karin” class.

I admire Karin’s dedication and commitment to ensure safe chemotherapy administration to our pediatric population.
