Neurology ICU had a patient admitted from an outside hospital (further away) and she was not doing well. The daughter was to arrive at 0100 at the airport from California. Kary had cared for this patient and after her PM shift was over, she told the family she would pick up the daughter from the airport since the family was not from the area.

To complicate things, it was a subzero night and Kary's car wouldn't start. After an hour of waiting for AAA, she called up to the unit and asked for one of the staff to jump her car so she would not be late. Not only did she give the daughter a coat and gloves to wear, since she came from California to the bitter cold, but she had to work again the next day. She didn't get home until after 0200. The family decided to withdraw care and was very appreciative of the kindness shown to them during that difficult time.
