In my humble opinion, Kathy Westbrook demonstrated all the criteria for the DAISY Award. Kathy made sure she knew how we were connected to C. She always introduced us as the wife, the mother or the father to other personnel who entered the room. She displayed so much compassion for our situation with a hug, a pat on the back or just a few words of encouragement with a smile.
Kathy didn't miss a beep when that IV machine needed attention. Not only that, but she took the time to explain if the IV was empty, had an air bubble or just needed adjustments. She explained every single medication he was administered, its purpose or possible side effects if we were concerned. Many times, she had to repeat the information again and again when another friend or family member arrived, but she had no problem doing this.
When we needed more seating, Kathy was finding chairs before we even asked. Kathy was very organized with each task she would perform on C each day. She told us exactly what was going to transpire. I felt as if C was more than a patient to Kathy because she related to seeing her sons sick and needing help as well. Each time she arrived for her shift, she let us know she was thinking about us, as well as praying for my son. I adore her sweet, kind and calming personality.
