My mother came into the ER after being discharged from 6 East 3 days prior. She had a very extensive cardiac catheter to drill out her "widow maker" and had 4 stents placed. At home, she became very lethargic and nauseated. After getting outpatient labs done we discovered she had a critical potassium level and needed to go to the emergency room immediately. She was admitted as an IMC patient but there were no beds available so we had to spend two nights in the ER. I am a nurse myself and I am aware that the ER nurses are not staffed to care for IMC patients and they are extremely busy taking care of acute patients and situations at any given moment.
Our second night in ER Kayla Cole went above and beyond. I feel my mother got the most excellent care she could have ever received in an IMC or ICU for that matter. Kayla checked on my mother frequently and when her B/P was down she called the doctor and notified them and got orders for bolus' to keep her blood pressure up. She woke me up and kept me informed each and every time. Kayla spoke to my mother with respect and told her exactly what was happening and what to expect next. You may think, "well isn't that what a nurse is supposed to do", well yes, it is. But that doesn't always happen in today's world and especially when a nurse is taking care of a patient that is IMC status along with ER patients. Kayla treated me and my mother like we were one of her own family members and her concern for my mother was genuine. I believe Kayla Cole is a real asset to your organization. Thank you.
