I would like to commend Kayla Paul, RN (Gagnon 3) for her excellent nursing skills and recommend that she be recognized for her actions, which occurred during a patient transfer from Gagnon 3 to Gagnon 1. Kayla had given report to transfer a patient and then called back to provide an update on this situation. She explained to me that she noted slightly odd behavior displayed by the patient and explained that her "gut" feeling was that something was wrong. She suspected that the patient, given his history, was at imminent risk for endangering himself and others. She discussed the situation with her manager and additional support staff. Kayla's "intuition" was correct and appropriate interventions were carried out. Kayla's observations and actions prevented what could have turned into a very dangerous situation to both hospital staff and the patient.
I feel Kayla needs to be recognized for this because she could have simply dismissed the patient's odd behavior, and she did not. Her actions were a display of skills that are not learned in any nursing school but are acquired through experience. Kayla exemplified the skills of true critical thinking and the qualities of a truly caring and compassionate nurse. I feel as nurses we need to commend and support our colleagues when situations like this occur. Her actions reflect highly upon herself, the Gagnon Cardiovascular Institute, Morristown Medical Center and the Nursing Profession as a whole.
