We had a patient on the floor today who was admitted with a diagnosis of pelvic fracture. The patient was very confused and would become easily upset and agitated with staff, expressing a desire to leave the hospital and did not understand why the staff wanted to be with her constantly to keep her safe. I found out that the patient was a retired piano teacher and became calmer and happy if asked to talk about music, her daughters and her piano students. I told Keila, her primary nurse, this as I thought it would benefit both patient and nurse, making the patient more receptive to having staff in her room. Keila took things a step further by arranging for the patient and her daughter to be escorted by wheelchair down to the 2nd floor chapel so that she could use the piano. They were also taken outside to enjoy the sunny weather before coming back to their room. She made it possible for an elderly, confused patient to be very happy. The patient's daughter was very appreciative of this gesture as she was very concerned that her mother was so agitated and unhappy in an unfamiliar environment. Not only did Keila take the time to make this happen for her patient, but I observed her taking the time to help the other nurses who were very busy with their patient care duties. I am very proud to work with her and I believe she is a true DAISY Nurse.
