The reason I nominated Kelley for the DAISY Award because I witnessed a great amount of compassion she showed to an actively dying patient. This patient was all alone during his stay. Kelley tried to contact multiple family members to convey the situation. After speaking to a few different family members, none of them were willing to come to the hospital to be with this man.
During the day I noticed that Kelley spent most of her free time in this patient's room. She gave the patient a bath and kept a wet towel on his head. She held his hand and played music on her phone for him throughout her shift. This patient, who was said to be unable to communicate, would do so by squeezing her hand. I like to think that she comforted him during one of his last days, if only for a shift. I saw her show compassion to this patient that I haven't seen in a very long time. She didn't have to do any of these things but did. It helps remind me why I got into nursing, to care and comfort those who need it the most.
