Kelsey Zimmer is the epitome of a DAISY Nurse! A patient on our unit with an acute chronic illness was nearing the end of life. Kelsey got to know this patient rather well as she had cared for him for several shifts in a row. During a conversation with the patient's spouse, Kelsey learned that the patient had a great love for the family dog. The spouse explained how the dog acted as a form of therapy for the patient. Being the amazing and thoughtful nurse that she is, Kelsey wanted the patient to be able to see the dog one last time.
Kelsey contacted ID and discussed the actions that needed to take place to allow the dog to come in and see his owner. Kelsey worked with the patient's spouse and got all the paperwork necessary to make it happen. A day or so later the dog came in to see his owner one last time. Not only was it a happy experience for the patient, but the family was also moved as well. They expressed so much gratitude towards Kelsey and all involved. They had all their family present for the experience and said it was one they will always remember and hold close to their hearts. A few days after this, the patient was transitioned to comfort care. Kelsey gave not only the patient the ability to see the family dog, but she also gave the whole entire family an opportunity to come together and do something very special for their loved one. It is an honor to work alongside such a caring nurse. She exemplifies the true nature of what it is to be a nurse and is admired by all of us here in the MICU.
