My father was admitted on Saturday and unfortunately, we lost him on Thursday. The nurse on day shift, Kevin, was amazing. My father was brought up from the emergency room on Saturday evening and placed on oxygen. On Sunday, Kevin had inquired as to whether my father used oxygen at home, and we advised that he did not. Kevin explained to us that having him on oxygen was a life sustaining measure and my father had a DNR on file. He advised that they were going to remove the oxygen so that the natural process could take place. Kevin did so with such compassion for what our family was about to endure and was very clear with keeping us updated with what to expect.
On Monday my father woke up lucid and talking and wanting to eat. Kevin explained that this sometimes happens and is often referred to as the rally. Our family was so happy that we had this time with my father and as expected, he began to decline later that evening. On Tuesday morning I spoke with Kevin and he let me know that my father had started the end of life process at which point we asked for them to make him as comfortable as possible. Kevin was so attentive and was always available for us during our stay. Kevin made sure that my father was moved regularly for comfort and that his needs were always a priority. He was clear in his explanations and was always happy to answer our questions. The staff made sure that the comfort cart in front of the room was always stocked with fresh fruit and coffee and we were grateful for that during our 4 day stay.
Kevin showed extreme compassion for our family while caring for my father and always made sure that my mother and our family were taken care of. It is a clear indicator that he takes pride in what he does, and it shows in everything he does. Kevin allowed my father to have a dignified and peaceful end and our family is so very grateful for his care and compassion.
I can't thank Kevin enough for his kind heart during out time of loss. People like Kevin are very hard to find, and it lets me know that there are truly amazing people still out there.
