It is with the utmost respect and grateful thanks that I nominate Kyle Sellman for the prestigious DAISY Award. My father has been in inpatient at Sanford Health a number of times over the years with his first mild heart attack. Complications from that heart attack have led us on a journey that has been filled with the unknown.
One day, he was brought by ambulance after a fall in a grocery store bathroom while I was with him. What started out as a gentleman who hit the floor on blood thinners injuring his hand quickly escalated into a breathing event where he had to be intubated in the ER. He was brought up to ICU in the critical condition. The next several hours were filled with dreadful thoughts.
As we arrived the next morning, Kyle Sellman was dad's nurse. Kyle led us through some very dark hours, filling in the gaps, telling us what would happen next, preparing us for the next step. Now while that would be expected as a professional - it was the way that news was delivered with concern and compassion that eased our fears. Even when he had to be fully sedated at the end of the breathing trial the next day, he kept us expectant of a better result the next day, which ultimately happened with a positive outcome.
We were so fortunate to be able to call him "family" as we worked through this chapter. Dad is now in transitional care at Eventide Fargo.
Kyle Sellman, hats off to you for not only helping my dad but for helping us through as well. You epitomize the statue out in front of the hospital: Health, Calling, Healing, Community and Leadership. You display these worthy traits for all you care for, patients and families!
